        • DescriptionThe World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2012 is being organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). It will focus on sustainable development trends and information and communication technology (ICT) initiatives in some key focus areas of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), such as health, education, gender empowerment and the environment. The Forum will also include the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day awards ceremony, which will recognize three outstanding laureates in the field of technology and gender.

        Inter-regional Learning Meeting on National Preparations For Rio+20 Dakar (Kaolack), Senegal
        • DescriptionThe UN Economic Commission on Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host a meeting on the theme "Sharing knowledge to improve MDG monitoring and reporting". The meeting is expected to be attended by delegates from all five UN regional commissions, experts from specialized international agencies and representatives from some national statistics offices from each continent. The purpose of the meeting is to share successful experiences of monitoring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in order to promote horizontal cooperation among countries.

        Interregional Meeting on MDG Indicators Santiago (Region Metropolitana), Chile
        • DescriptionWorld Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is intended to raise awareness of the potential for the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. The 17th of May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. The theme of this year's WTISD is "Women and Girls in ICT".

        World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2012 worldwide
        • DescriptionThe US will host the 38th Summit of the Group of Eight (G8) at Camp David, Maryland, in May 2012. The G8 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the UK, and the US. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Chicago, back-to-back with the NATO summit, but the US announced the change in location and dates on 5 March (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/05/statement-press-secretary-g-8-and-nato-summits). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its summit in Chicago from 20-21 May (see http://www.chicagonato.org/ for more information). The Presidents Benin, Ghana and Tanzania and Prime Minister of Ethiopia are expected to join in the discussions on food security in Africa.

        • DescriptionThe Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)'s Committee on Agriculture (COAG) will consider technical work relating to: options for stakeholder dialogue in support of sustainable livestock developments; sustainable crop production intensification; perspectives of land and water resources in a changing climate; and improving statistics for food security, sustainable agriculture and rural development.

        • DescriptionThe first Southern African Solar Energy Conference will focus on both Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal technology systems and applications.     The Reporting Services division of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), with funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), manages the African Regional Coverage (ARC) project, which aims to deliver news and information on environment and sustainable development negotiations and policy making in Africa. Launched in 2006, the ARC initiative works to improve the transparency of the region's policy discussions on sustainable development and to raise their profile at the international level.
