IPBES to Undertake Thematic Assessment on Land Degradation and Restoration [viewed]

ipbes17 January 2015: The third session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-3) has approved a timetable for carrying out an assessment on land degradation and restoration. The assessment is part of a first set of three thematic assessments to be carried out by the Platform between 2015 and 2018. The final outcome will include an executive summary presenting key findings and policy-relevant conclusions, a summary for policymakers and an eight-chapter report.

UNCCD Launches Land Degradation Neutrality Project [viewed]

UNCCD logoJanuary 2015: The inception meeting of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Project, attended by 15 country delegates, took place from 14-16 January 2014 in Bonn, Germany. The project's objective is to contribute towards implementing the outcomes of the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20), by providing the UNCCD with empirical evidence on the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the LDN goal.

Event: UNCCD CRIC 13 [viewed]

The thirteenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 13) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will take place two weeks after the UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference and fourth special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4). CRIC 13 will be preceded by Consultations of affected country Parties of the Convention's Regional Implementation Annexes on 23 and 24 March 2015. Delegates will also discuss how to integrate ongoing processes to align national action programmes with the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to sustainable land management.

UNCCD logoJanuary 2015: The thirteenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 13) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will review progress made in implementing the Convention's 10-Year Strategic Plan (The Strategy) and make recommendations to the Conference of the Parties (COP) on further steps to be taken to facilitate the effective implementation of the Convention. Delegates will also discuss how to integrate ongoing processes to align national action programmes with the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to sustainable land management.

The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat has announced that the slogan for the 2015 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will be 'No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soils'. National and global observances will convene under the theme, 'attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems'. A global observance event will take place in Milan, Italy, during the UN Expo Milano 2015.

unccdlandJanuary 2015: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has announced that the slogan of the 2015 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), which is observed worldwide on 17 June, will be 'No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soils.' With a focus on the "attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems," WDCD 2015 will aim to strengthen links between the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on eradicating hunger and restoring degraded land and soil.

Forum Promotes Climate Action through South-South Cooperation [viewed]

UNEP8 December 2014: The South-South Cooperation on Climate Change Forum, held in parallel to the Lima Climate Change Conference, established the basic value proposition and importance of South-South cooperation, identified its enablers and constraints, and outlined options and mechanisms for promoting it. Through discussions with practitioners, policymakers and academics, the Forum contributed to integrating South-South cooperation into negotiations on the post-2015 climate change agreement.
