Forum Promotes Climate Action through South-South Cooperation [viewed]

UNEP8 December 2014: The South-South Cooperation on Climate Change Forum, held in parallel to the Lima Climate Change Conference, established the basic value proposition and importance of South-South cooperation, identified its enablers and constraints, and outlined options and mechanisms for promoting it. Through discussions with practitioners, policymakers and academics, the Forum contributed to integrating South-South cooperation into negotiations on the post-2015 climate change agreement.

Event: Regional Workshop for NENA countries on Capacity Development to Support National Drought Management Policies [viewed]

The UN-Water Initiative is organizing a regional workshop for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) countries under its ‘Capacity Development to Support Drought Management Policies' Initiative. The initiative aims to increase the capacity of developing countries and countries in transition to develop risk-based national drought management policies. UN-Water and its partners are holding a series of regional workshops in drought-prone regions in 2013 and 2014, which will culminate in a final, international conference. The workshop is co-organized with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

FAO, EU-ACP Launch Programme to Combat Desertification [viewed]

FAO EU22 October 2014: The European Union (EU) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have launched the ‘Action Against Desertification' programme in collaboration with the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP). The €41 million programme aims to enhance sustainable land management (SLM) and restore degraded lands and drylands in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Global Mechanism, IOM Project Promotes SLM in West Africa [viewed]

global-mechanism-iom8 October 2014: The Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are working on a project that promotes sustainable land management (SLM) in migration-prone areas in West-Africa through the use of innovative financing mechanisms. The three-year project, funded by the Government of Italy, supports Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Senegal in efforts to prevent land degradation and restore degraded land areas by increasing investments in SLM.

New York Declaration on Forests Pledges to Halt Natural Forest Loss by 2030 [viewed]

United Nations23 September 2014: The 'New York Declaration on Forests', as announced at the Climate Summit 2014, pledges to halve the rate of deforestation by 2020, halt the loss of natural forests by 2030, and restore 350 million hectares of degraded areas. Twenty-seven developed and developing countries, 34 companies, 16 indigenous peoples' organizations, and 45 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) have endorsed the Declaration.

Event: Joint CBD, UNCCD Workshop on NBSAPs - NAP Synergies [viewed]

The Secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) are jointly organizing a workshop on synergies for the design, development and implementation of CBD National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and UNCCD National Action Programmes (NAPs). Participants will be selected to attend through a nomination process and will include those directly responsible for the development, updating and/or implementation of the CBD NBSAPs and the UNCCD NAPs. Nominations should be submitted no later than 10 October 2014. This meeting will convene immediately after the North Africa Regional Workshop of the UN-Water Initiative, titled ‘Capacity Development to Support National Drought Management Policies,' which is taking place from 17-20 November 2014.
