Event: 39th Session of IFAD's Governing Council [viewed]

The 39th session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will meet under the theme ‘Inclusive investment - Rural people, state and business in the post-2015 agenda'. The meeting has on its agenda, inter alia: the election of the Governing Council's Bureau; a statement of IFAD's President and general statements; the report of the Tenth Replenishment of IFAD's Resources; consolidated financial statements of IFAD for 2014; IFAD's 2016 results-based programme of work and regular and capital budgets, the Independent Office of Evaluation of IFAD's results-based work programme and budget for 2016 and indicative plan for 2017-2018; the Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD); emoluments of the President; and an update on the Ad Hoc Working Group on Governance. The IFAD Governing Council, which meets annually, is the Fund's principal Governing Body.

GLF Highlights Climate-related Land-Use Issues and Research [viewed]

glf_paris7 December 2015: The 2015 Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) gathered more than 3,000 people to discuss priority issues including land restoration, financing for sustainable landscapes and strengthening the role of indigenous peoples and local communities in land-related decision-making. Several publications were launched in concert with the Forum, which convened from 5-6 December 2015, on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference.

Event: Land Day at UNFCCC COP 21 [viewed]

This one-day event will take place on the sidelines of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, and will address the overall theme of ‘Land Degradation Neutrality as a solution to climate change'. A series of panel discussions will explore interlinkages between the achievement of land degradation neutrality (LDN) targets under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change. Specific sessions will address, among other topics: ecosystem based adaptation; evergreen agriculture and land restoration; ecological rainfall infrastructure: a new perspective on how forests and trees matter for climate; and ‘Desertification, Land degradation and Climate Change - Time to Act!' The event will also explore civil society contributions to LDN, including through the ‘4 per mill' initiative to spur a transition towards agroecology.

UNCCD Publishes Science-Policy Brief on 'Pivotal Soil Carbon' [viewed]

unccd_spi16 November 2015: The Science-Policy Interface (SPI) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has published its first "Science-Policy Brief." The brief provides an overview of key facts and figures, as well as policy recommendations, for optimizing the contribution of soil organic carbon in mitigating climate change and increasing agro-ecosystem resilience through improved soil quality.

UNCCD COP 12 Discusses SDG Target on Land Degradation Neutrality, DLDD Links with Climate Change [viewed]

cop12unccd23 October 2015: The 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 12) adopted 35 decisions following deliberations on agenda items related to desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD), including how to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDG) target to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) and how to align the UNCCD's goals and Parties' action programmes with the Goals. Parties also considered messages for the Paris Climate Change Conference, which will take place from 30 November-11 December 2015.

Governments Air Priorities for 2030 Agenda, Sustainable Development [viewed]

unga7020 October 2015: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held its discussion of sustainable development (agenda item 20) and several sub-items, including on climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and small island developing States (SIDS). UN Assistant Secretary-General, Lenni Montiel, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), who introduced several reports of the UN Secretary-General, said sustainable development is not confined to one item on the Committee's agenda; instead, the Committee should consider all issues before it through the lens of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
