26th Meeting of the LDC Expert Group

The Least Developed Countries (LDC) Expert Group (LEG) will convene its 26th meeting from 4-7 August 2014. The LEG supports the preparation and implementation strategy of the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) and provides technical assistance and guidance on National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). The LEG carries out its work through the review of draft NAPAs as requested, providing direct advice to LDCs, training workshops, and publication of guides, tools, technical papers and databases. The LEG meets twice a year.

US-Africa Leaders Summit

The first US-Africa Leaders Summit will aim to further strengthen ties with Africa, build on progress made since US President Obama's trip to Africa in 2013, and advance a focus on investment and trade in Africa. US President Barack Obama will invite an expected 47 leaders from African countries.

International Workshop on Open Data for Science and Sustainability in Developing Countries

This workshop is being organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Council for Science's (ICSU) Committee on Data for Science and Technology, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations' Communication and Information Committee, and Kenya's Ministry of Communication and Information. It will discuss strategies and objectives of sponsoring and participating organizations concerning open data for science and sustainability in developing countries, with special consideration for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ICSU's Future Earth research program in developing countries. The workshop will also develop and endorse a set of principles and guidelines for preservation of, and open access to, research data in developing countries.

NAP Expo

Stakeholders from Least Developed Countries (LDCs), other developing countries, and supporting agencies and organizations will gather for the second National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Expo. The event will take place over two days to: act as a platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences, lessons learned and ideas on the NAP process; mobilize action and support for the creation and implementation of NAPs; share technical knowledge, including on methods, data and tools; and assess needs that should be filled in order to implement the NAP process effectively and to further inform the bodies supporting these processes. The LDC Expert Group (LEG) is organizing the Expo, with support from the UNFCCC Secretariat and an advisory group consisting of, inter alia, representatives from the Adaptation Committee and its Task Force on NAPs, GEF agencies, bilateral agencies and international organizations. The first NAP Expo was held in June 2013.

CBD International Workshop on Financing for Biodiversity

This UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) workshop will provide technical follow-up on the elements of the recommendation on resource mobilization, to be adopted by the fifth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation (WGRI 5) for consideration by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP 12). It is organized with support from Japan, the Republic of Korea and Switzerland, as well as the European Commission.

Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States

The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia". In addition, a Partnerships Forum will take place on 30-31 August.

15th World Lake Conference

The 15th World Lake Conference, convened by the International Lake Environment Committee (ILEC), will take place on the theme “Lakes: The Mirrors of the Earths, Balancing Ecosystem Integrity and Human Wellbeing”. The conference will bring together representatives from international, national and state agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions, the private sector and other water stakeholders. Topics covered will include: ecology and biology of inland water; inland system processes and dynamics; inland system and global change, including climate change; informatics, mapping and monitoring; lake and human connection; lake basin management experiences and challenges; governance and management; and lake basin best management practices.

GRASP Regional Meeting – East Africa

This two-day meeting of the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) is designed to promote cooperation and collaboration among the five countries comprising the GRASP East African Group (Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda), along with conservation organizations, research institutions and other agencies working in the region.

CBD Expert Workshop on Practical Guidance for Marine Spatial Planning

Hosted by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this expert workshop aims to provide consolidated practical guidance and a toolkit for marine spatial planning. Aiming to respond to the request of the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP) for the development of a web-based information-sharing system linking existing information sources on marine spatial planning, the workshop will review submissions on scientific and technical information, case studies, tools and guidance, and relevant management plans related to marine spatial planning.

69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69)

The 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) will convene at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 16 September 2014. The General Debate will open on Wednesday, 24 September 2014. The debate's opening was postponed from Tuesday, 23 September 2014, to accommodate the Climate Summit (resolution A/RES/57/301 and decision 68/512).

International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is organizing this symposium to highlight existing practices in agroecology and exchange information on the latest research and science in the field. The symposium is expected to result in an action plan for a follow-up process for Africa and Asia; contributions to an international framework for research on agroecology, including relevant economic, social, environmental and climatic aspects; and informational material such as video interviews and agroecological practices for online sharing. The two-day preliminary agenda will include inter alia: a keynote on the landscape of agroecology; plenaries covering ecosystem services, social processes and virtuous cycles in agroecology; and a high-level segment. The symposium supports Strategic Objective 2 (“Increase and improve provision of Goods and Services from Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in a sustainable manner”) of the FAO Strategic Framework.

Special Session of the General Assembly on the Follow-Up to the Programme of Action of the ICPD

An 8-hour Special Session to Follow Up on the Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) is being organized to coincide with the high-level segment of the general debate at the UN General Assembly. The General Assembly has urged all Member and observer States and observers to be represented at the highest political level, including Heads of State or Government. Member States will have opportunity to recommit themselves to the ICPD Programme of Action. Civil society is expected to be involved in this meeting, based on equitable geographic representation.

2014 Climate Summit

Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety COP-MOP 7

The seventh meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is scheduled for 29 September-3 October 2014. Among other issues, the meeting is expected to address: handling, transport, packaging and identification (HTPI) of living modified organisms (LMOs); risk assessment and risk management; and socio-economic considerations.

African Regional Workshop on NAMAs

The UNFCCC Secretariat is organizing an African Regional Wokshop on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) to: facilitate the exchange of best practices and lessons learnt in preparation and implementation of NAMAs by providing a platform to showcase NAMAs and innovative financing options; collaborate with international partners to conduct the workshops and ensure synergy, coherence, cost effectiveness and avoid duplication; provide a platform for networking by bringing experts of developing countries and international organizations/donors together; provide partners from international organizations with an opportunity to better understand capacity building needs of countries in the region so that they can target their technical support to meet specific needs of developing countries; and explore how and by what means the experiences gained in implementation of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) standards could be linked with NAMAs.

CBD COP 12

The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. The theme of the meeting will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' The Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP 7) will take place immediately before COP 12.

14th Congo Basin Forests Partnership (CBFP) Anchor Workshop

This meeting will convene representatives and partners from the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) in order to discuss issues related to REDD+ in the region, the revised convergence plan of Commission des Forets d'Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC), ways and means to address drivers of deforestation, and the loss of forest biodiversity.

Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV)

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Each year, CCDA brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, the policy arena and intergovernmental organizations to discuss the interrelationships between climate change and development, with a focus on opportunities, best practices, different approaches, strategies and planning. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Cities Biodiversity Summit

The Cities Biodiversity Summit will be co-hosted by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, and Gangwon Province, the Republic of Korea. It will take place during the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, bringing together scientists, NGOs and biodiversity experts from around the world. The Summit will take stock of previous Summits and forge actions for implementing a Plan of Action.

Tenth Meeting of the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC10)

This subsidiary body of the Rotterdam Convention reviews chemicals and pesticide formulations according to the criteria set out by the Convention in Annexes II and IV respectively and make recommendations to the COP for listing these chemicals in Annex III. A pre-meeting is scheduled for 21 October, and the CRC 10 meeting will take place from 22-24 October. This meeting is taking place back-to-back with the tenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC10).

Tenth Meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC 10)

The Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) is a subsidiary body to the Stockholm Convention established for reviewing chemicals proposed for listing in Annex A, Annex B, and/or Annex C. The tenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC10) will take place from 27-30 October, with a pre-meeting on 26 October. This meeting is taking place back-to-back with the tenth meeting of the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC10).

Africa Conference on Land Grabs 2014

The first Africa Conference on Land Grabs will explore the theme 'Governance, Beneficiation and Sustainability: Beyond Rhetoric' through interactive, peer-reviewed parallel sessions. The conference will provide a platform for government officials, writers, academics, businesses, funders and other stakeholders to exchange views in five tracks: Understanding Land Grabs: What implications for Africa?; Community Involvement, Accountability and Beneficiation; Water Access, Food Security and the Future of Commons; Private Sector, Foreign Ownership and Sustainable Development; and Strengthening Land Governance (local, national and continental) and Cadastral Capacity. Scholarships are available for participants, with priority for individuals who will bring knowledge and skills gained at the conference to work in their communities.

IPCC 40

The 40th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 40) will be held to adopt the Fifth Assessment Review (AR5) Synthesis Report and approve its Summary for Policy Makers. Subsequently, in December 2014, a copy of the Synthesis Report will be presented to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC.

47th Meeting of the GEF Council

Workshop on International Arrangement on Forests (IAF) beyond 2015

This workshop is being convened as a contribution to the work of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) in order to consider options for a future International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). The country-led initiative workshop will build on the work of the first Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG1), which considered views from Parties on the matter as well as the report of the Independent Assessment. 42nd Meeting of the CMS Standing Committee

The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) will convene prior to the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to CMS. The Standing Committee was established by Resolution 1.1 of the COP. It is responsible for carrying out interim activities on behalf of the COP to: ensure that decisions are implemented; monitor the budget; make recommendations for consideration by the next COP; provide advice and guidance to the Secretariat; represent the COP in negotiations with the Host Government and UNEP with regard to the Secretariat; act as a bureau at the COP; and undertake any other ad hoc task assigned to it by the COP.

Second UN Conference on LLDCs

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' has four key aims. It aims to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. In advance of the conference, the Open-ended Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for the Conference is expected to hold two sessions at UN Headquarters in New York, the US: the first from 12-13 June; and the second from 11-12 September.

WINDaba

This annual conference and exhibition hosted by the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), in partnership with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), is intended to serve as a meeting point for wind energy professionals, including policymakers and innovators. Organized for the fourth time in 2014, the WINDaba conference will comprise sessions focusing on different aspects of wind power development in South Africa, including energy planning processes, future renewable energy conferences, independent power producer procurement and industry.

Sixth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Mercury (INC 6)

As mandated in the resolution on arrangements in the interim period adopted by the Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) on mercury established pursuant to Governing Council decision 25/5 will meet during the period between the date on which the Convention is opened for signature and the date of the opening of the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention as may be necessary to facilitate the rapid entry into force of the Convention and its effective implementation upon its entry into force.

Fiftieth Session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC)

The annual meeting of the ITTC will consider progress in the implementation of International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) projects and activities in support of the sustainable management of tropical forests and the promotion of trade in sustainably produced tropical timber.

CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

The Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will emphasize accomplishing the three Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) objectives through a regional agenda and sharing of experiences, namely universal access to modern energy services, doubling energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030 globally. The Forum is organized by the Government of Tunisia and the UN Economic Commissions for Europe, Western Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa. A high-level dialogue on 'International Cooperation towards Sustainable Energy for All' is expected to adopt a declaration reaffirming the roles of key stakeholders and calling for joining efforts to achieve the SE4All objectives. The forum will also include a workshop on energy efficiency investments and the launch of a new UN Development Account project on promoting renewable energy investments.

G20 Leaders' Summit 2014

The Group of Twenty (G20) is a forum that assembles 19 members plus the EU, representing the world's major economies. General themes include global economy, financial regulation, poverty reduction and sustainable development. The next G20 Summit will take place in Australia, which will work as a troika in defining the next work programme in cooperation with the past (Russian Federation) and future (Turkey) hosts. The G20 members are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and the US, as well as the EU.

Second International Conference on Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly organising this intergovernmental conference with the participation of Heads of State and Government and other UN agencies. The conference will identify public policy priorities at the national and global levels to address under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. The conference aims to improve coordination among the food, health and agriculture sectors, and is expected to result in a political commitment for action and resource mobilization towards the goal of improved nutrition, contributing to the post-2015 development agenda and the Zero Hunger Challenge. The First International Conference on Nutrition took place in 1992, resulting in a World Declaration and Plan of Action for Nutrition.

First International Environment Forum for Basin Organizations

The expected outcomes of the Forum include: the establishment of a regular platform for basin organizations to debate and work towards improving the governance and management of transboundary freshwater resources; strengthened legal, policy, financial and institutional mechanisms to support basin organizations in meeting environmental challenges for both surface and groundwater resources; priority actions to strengthen the ecosystems in transboundary basins applicable to both surface and groundwater resources identified by stakeholders; and increased political and institutional support to international cooperative frameworks for the sustainable management of transboundary basins.

CBD Expert Workshop to Prepare Practical Guidance on Preventing and Mitigating the Significant Adverse Impacts of Marine Debris on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity and Habitats

This workshop is being organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) with the support from the European Commission. It will bring together nominated experts to discuss the impacts of marine debris on marine and coastal biodiversity and habitats.

Second Meeting of the SAICM OEWG

The Second Meeting of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG2) is expected to: review and prioritize proposals for emerging policy issues in preparation for the fourth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4); consider proposals for the inclusion of new activities in the Global Plan of Action; consider the outcomes of regional meetings; and identify priority issues for consideration at ICCM4.

Third Session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Plenary

The third session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) plenary will review progress made on the adopted IPBES work programme for 2014 – 2018, including the related budget and institutional arrangements for its implementation. In addition, the third session of the IPBES plenary will select the members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) based on the nominations received from governments. The event will be preceded by consultations and a stakeholder day on 10-11 January.

2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. This invitation-only event also will help UN-Water to prepare for World Water Day, which will focus on “water and sustainable development” in 2015.

World Future Energy Summit 2015

The World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2015 is dedicated to renewable energies, energy efficiency and clean technologies. It will offer a number of renewable energy-related events, including a conference, exhibition, Project and Finance Village, and Young Future Energy Leaders program. Hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, the event will be attended by international policy makers, industry experts, investors and media, who will discuss practical and sustainable solutions to future energy challenges.

15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) is expected to convene in 2015. The Commission provides the only permanent forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters specifically relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture. The Commission aims to reach international consensus on policies for the sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use.

Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These three meetings are expected to result in a summary of discussions that will be submitted to the President of the UNGA, and are anticipated to contribute to a decision to be taken at the 69th Session of the UNGA on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.

UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference

The UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference will take place from 9-12 March 2015, in Mexico, and will address the theme "Combating desertification, land degradation and drought for poverty reduction and sustainable development – the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices”. It will be held during the fourth special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Scientific Conference aims harness a wide range of scientific, local and traditional knowledge to achieve poverty reduction and sustainable development in areas susceptible to desertification, land degradation and drought. The Conference is being organized by the UNCCD Secretariat and the Scientific and Traditional Knowledge for Sustainable Development (STK4SD) Consortium.

The 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Basel Convention, seventh meeting of the COP to the Rotterdam Convention, and seventh meeting of the COP to the Stockholm Convention are expected to convene back-to-back in May 2015.

UN Forum on Forests Eleventh Session (UNFF11)

The eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) will consider the future of the international arrangement on forests, based on challenges and its effectiveness. The meeting will also review progress in the implementation of the global objectives on forests and the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests. Thematic issues under consideration will include sustainable forest management (SFM) and forest law enforcement as was as cooperation and coordination.

Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund

The 2015 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund will take place in Lima, Peru, in October 2015. The Annual Meetings bring together ministers of finance and central bank governors from the institutions' 188 member countries, and provide a forum for civil society, the private sector, academics and others to engage in discussions on economic issues.

South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC)

The Government of South Africa together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) are hosting the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC), to gather ministers, decision-makers, civil society, academia and the private sector to discuss experiences and strategies for accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy. The event is aimed particularly at giving the African renewable energy industry opportunities to showcase its work and gain insights from other participants. This event will build upon previous "IREC" conferences held in Abu Dhabi (2013), Delhi (2010), Washington D.C (2008), Beijing (2005) and Bonn (2004).

Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.
