The third Mediterranean Forest Week is being organized by the Governments of Algeria, France, Germany, Tunisia and Turkey along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Secretariat of the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions, l'Association Internationale Forêts Méditerranéennes (AIFM), Centre Technique Forestier Tropical (CTFT), The European Forest Institute (EFIMED), the Mediterranean Forests Model Network (MFMN), and Plan Bleu. The Week will be convened under the theme, "Mediterranean forests for sustainable development of territories: what strategies of mitigation and adaptation to global change". It will focus on strengthening links between the scientific community and other stakeholders working in, or reliant upon, Mediterranean Forests examining both the contribution of Mediterranean forests to economic development and ecosystem services and the links between climate change and Mediterranean forests.

This event will bring together members of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) for the 12th Meeting of Partners (MoP), from 19-20 March 2013, to advance actions carried out during the transitional period. The MoP will be joined by two additional events. Prior to the MoP, on 18 March 2013, there will be a CBFP Thematic Day on gender equality, organized by the Conference on Ecosystems of Dense and Humid Forests of Central Africa (CEDHFCA) Sub-regional Steering Committee and a Team of technical experts mobilized by Canada. Following the MoP, on 21-22 March 2013, the Observatory of Central African Forests (OFAC) will hold a validation workshop on the State of Forests (EDF) 2012. The meeting is organized with financial support from the Government of Canada and technical assistance from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) program on Regional Support for the Central African Forests Commission (COMIFAC).

The Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) training workshop on adaptation for Francophone least developed countries (LDCs) targets Francophone LDCs, comprising 17 parties to the UNFCCC.

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for French-speaking countries in Africa in Senegal (BCRC-Senegal). The workshop is targeted at national offices who have started the process of reviewing and updating their country's National Implementation Plan (NIP) and dioxin/furan inventories to address the POPs listed in 2009 and 2011.

The International Day of Forests will be observed for the first time on 21 March 2013. Considering that there was no globally-recognized date commemorating and raising awareness on this issue, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution in December 2012, on the recommendation of its Second Committee, proclaiming 21 March the annual International Day of Forests. The text encourages member States to organize annual events on forests and trees outside forests, including, for example, tree-planting campaigns. The draft requests the Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) to act as the facilitator of the International Day in collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and other relevant organizations.
