Intersessional Meeting for 3rd International Conference on SIDS

The intersessional meeting in preparation for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) will take place from 21-25 April 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, according to a draft decision approved in the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee on 11 December 2013 (A/C.2/68/L.67). The SIDS Conference is scheduled for 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa.

Africa Clean Energy Summit

The 2014 African Clean Energy Summit (ACES) will bring together decision makers, policymakers, industry leaders, investors, experts and media under the theme of Sustainable Energy for All. Participants from around the world are invited to explore the challenges and opportunities for renewable energy through an international exhibition, technical sessions, business forums and other concurrent activities. The event will also inaugurate the Africa Women Roundtable on Clean Energy and Energy Poverty and the Africa Children and Youth Roundtable on Clean Energy and Green Lifestyle. The African Union Commission (AUC) and Government of Nigeria are organizing the Summit, with support from various other partners.

Global Oceans Action Summit for Food Security and Blue Growth

The Global Ocean Action Summit for Food Security and Blue Growth, organized by the Government of the Netherlands and the World Bank, is meant to "seal major deals for worldwide action" addressing the threats to the health and productivity of oceans. The meeting aims to mobilize financial and technical support for attaining established goals under the Global Partnership for Oceans (GPO). It will also host the first official assembly of GPO partners, and will mark the implementation phase of the GPO. In addition, a report indicating priority areas and regions for action will be launched by the GPO Blue Ribbon Panel, an independent group of ocean experts. Attendance is by invitation only. The Summit was originally scheduled to take place in September 2013. The Summit will highlight the need to address the next frontier of successful integrated approaches that attract public-private partners, secure financing and catalyze good ocean governance while reconciling tensions and balancing priorities between growth and conservation, private sector interests and equitable benefits for communities and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) policy frameworks.

Sub-Saharan Africa Solar Conference 2014

In the near term, over US$40 billion of investment is needed per annum for sub-Saharan Africa to address the energy gap hindering its economic growth. This event will bring together key policymakers, investors, financiers, independent power producers and technology providers to explore sub-Saharan Africa's solar energy infrastructure development for rural electrification and energy intensive industrial applications.

Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management Meeting

The Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW) will meet on the sidelines of the 61st International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) General Assembly. CPW was established in March 2013, to help generate better understanding of critical wildlife management issues and their linkages to human-wildlife-conflict, food security, sustainable livelihoods and good governance.

Pan-African Conference on Inequalities in the Context of Structural Transformation

This high-level, multi-stakeholder conference is a follow-up to the UN-led Global Thematic Consultation on Addressing Inequalities in the Post-2015 Development Agenda. It aims to discuss the linkages between conversations on Africa's development, the post-2015 development agenda and an African agenda on inequalities. It further aims to build a common understanding of economic, social and political inequalities and how to address them through a structural transformation agenda. The conference is expected to result in a statement on ‘The Africa We Want' as a contribution to global discussions on ‘The World We Want'. The conference will include an opening by the President of Ghana, high-level panels, presentations, plenaries and parallel group discussions. A two-day meeting with civil society participants after the conference will map out a strategic action plan.

27th Meeting of the CITES AC, 21st Meeting of the CITES PC and Joint AC/PC Session

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Animals Committee (CITES AC) will hold its 27th meeting in Veracruz, Mexico, back-to-back with the 21st meeting of the CITES Plants Committee (CITES PC) and will include a two-day long joint session. The AC will meet from 28 April-1 May 2014; the CITES AC/PC session will be held from 2-3 May 2014; and the CITES PC will meet from 4-8 May 2014.

First African Water Integrity Learning Summit

The First African Water Integrity Learning Summit will take place under the theme 'Accelerating Towards a Water Secure World'. The event welcomes all interested stakeholders to share practical insights on addressing corruption and building relationships in Africa's water sector. The summit marks the conclusion of a three-year regional integrity training program in Sub-Saharan Africa and will provide opportunities to: engage with colleagues; participate in panel discussions; gain career enhancing knowledge; and advance integrity practices. The event is hosted by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Water Governance Facility, the Water Integrity Network, UNDP/Cap-Net, WaterNet and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).

CBD Regional Workshop for African Countries on the Clearing-House Mechanism

The objective of this workshop organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is to build capacity and provide guidance on how to establish and sustain effective national clearing-house mechanisms, in line with COP Decision X/15 and in support of the national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs).

Eleventh Session of the Open Working Group on SDGs

At the close of the Sixth Session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG 6) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Co-Chairs outlined options for the next phase of the process. The dates of a further set of formal OWG meetings were finalized at the conclusion of OWG 7. They will take place on: 3-5 March (OWG 9), 31 March - 4 April (OWG 10), 5-9 May (OWG 11), 16-20 June (OWG 12) and 14-18 July 2014 (OWG 13).

13th Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII 13)

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues will hold its 13th session in May 2014. The PFII was established by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July 2000 to advise the UN system on indigenous people's issues. The PFII session will address the theme of "Principles of good governance consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: articles 3 to 6 and 46 (3)."

Fifth Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - Regional Office for Africa (UNISDR AF), the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will bring together African Governments, regional intergovernmental organizations, civil society representatives, members of academic institutions, local governments, private sector organizations, the media, and youth at the Fifth Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting is expected to result in an African position on a Post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the context of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

WAVES Fourth Partnership Meeting

The fourth partnership meeting of the Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) program will bring together WAVES countries and partners to share successes and challenges, with a focus on water and ecosystem accounts. It will feature presentations from UN and private sector partners and panel discussions on how natural capital accounts (NCA) support wider development goals. WAVES is a global partnership that aims to promote sustainable development by ensuring that natural resources are mainstreamed in national economic accounts and development planning. The partnership includes UN agencies, governments, international institutes, NGOs and academics. The core implementing countries are Botswana, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Indonesia, Madagascar, the Philippines and Rwanda. WAVES was launched at the 2010 Convention on Biological Diversity meeting in Nagoya, Japan.

46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

ECOSOC Integration Segment

'Sustainable urbanization' will be the focus of the first-ever Integration Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The primary objective of the Integration Segment is to provide a multi-stakeholder platform to demonstrate how urbanization can be an effective tool for the integration of economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Attending the three-day event will be high-level representatives of Member States, including ministers and mayors, the UN system and civil society actors. The meeting will feature various interactive panel discussions, dialogues, and a town-hall style meeting. High-level roundtable breakfasts and side events organized by Member States, the UN system and other stakeholders will offer opportunities for ministers, mayors and other stakeholders to engage with each other on the future of cities.

15th Meeting of the Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea

The 15th meeting of the Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will focus on the theme, ‘The role of seafood in global food security'. The meeting will include plenary sessions and discussion panels on the following areas: understanding global food security and the current role of seafood; the role of seafood in global food security in the context of sustainable development; and opportunities for, and challenges to, the future role of seafood in global food security. The meeting will result in a Co-Chairs' summary of ideas and issues raised and discussed. The Consultative Process meets annually to conduct a review and consider the report of the Secretary-General on oceans and the law of the sea, with an emphasis on identifying areas for enhancing intergovernmental and inter-agency coordination and cooperation.

Eleventh Meeting of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

In accordance with its work plan, the Compliance Committee will address the following issues: consistency between the information in national reports and the Biosafety Clearing-House; the methodological approach proposed for the Protocol's third assessment and review; the third national reporting format; general issues of compliance; and the Committee's report and recommendations to the seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7) to be held in October 2014.

Resilient Cities 2014: Fifth Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation

Also known as 'Resilient Cities 2014,' this Forum is organized by ICLEI– Local Governments for Sustainability and the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, and co-sponsored by UN-HABITAT, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The event will focus on: risk data and analysis; adaptation planning and policy; comprehensive adaptation approaches; collaborative and community-based adaptation; resilient infrastructure and city-region support systems; and governance and capacity building.

ECOSOC Youth Forum

UNGA Dialogue 3 on Technology Transfer Mechanism

In General Assembly Resolution 68/210, UN Member States decided to hold a series of four, one-day structured dialogues to consider possible arrangements for a facilitation mechanism to promote the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies. The third dialogue will be held on 4 June 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The themes for the dialogue will be 'Identifying the potential for development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies and identifying options for the way forward'.

World Environment Day 2014

The UN General Assembly declared 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). World Environment Day (WED) 2014 will be celebrated under the theme of SIDS, with the goal of raising awareness of their unique development challenges and successes regarding a range of environmental problems, including climate change, waste management, unsustainable consumption, degradation of natural resources, and extreme natural disasters. UNEP is also soliciting votes for the 2014 WED slogan through 5 March 2014. The winning slogan will be used to call on the global WED community to take action for islands.

World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is meant to raise global awareness on the benefits derived from the oceans and the current challenges facing oceans, such as illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, habitat destruction, over-exploitation, marine pollution and ocean acidification, among others. The Day also provides an opportunity for reflection on our collective and individual duty to interact with oceans in a sustainable manner. The UN will celebrate World Oceans Day 2014 at an event on 9 June 2014 at UN Headquarters, New York, US. The winners of the Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo competition will be recognized at the event. The Day also coincides with the first day of the 24th Meeting of the Meeting of Parties (MOP) to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Other celebrations for World Ocean Day 2014 will be marked globally and online.

31st Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI 31)

This session will be held in June 2014. Based on its terms of reference, COFI: reviews the work programmes of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the field of fisheries, and their implementation; conducts periodic general reviews of international fishery problems and examine possible solutions through national, FAO and intergovernmental programmes; reviews specific matters relating to fisheries referred to the Committee by the Council or the Director-General, or placed by the Committee on its Agenda at the request of Member Nations in accordance with the rules of procedure of the Committee, and to make recommendations as may be appropriate; considers the desirability of preparing and submitting to Member Nations an international convention under Article XIV of the Constitution to ensure effective international cooperation and consultation in fisheries on a world scale; and reports to the Council or tender advice to the Director-General, as appropriate, on matters considered by the Committee.

16th Africa Energy Forum

The 16th Africa Energy Forum (AEF) will gather governments and business leaders in the energy sector to collaborate on improving energy infrastructure in Africa. Sessions will cover, among other topics, overcoming financing and other challenges, technological developments, and improving investment attractiveness of African infrastructure projects.

2014 CIF Partnership Forum

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are jointly convening the 2014 CIF Partnership Forum, hosting more than 400 participants from civil society, the private sector, governments, indigenous peoples and academia. A special pre-conference event on 22 June, 'Stakeholder Day,' will be dedicated to discussing progress and challenges in engaging key stakeholders in the CIF's activities. During the conference, panels will address a variety of topics including managing climate change programs and unlocking private finance from mini-grids to REDD+. The CIF is the world's largest group of funds for climate action, channeling $8 billion to low carbon and climate resilient development.

ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment

In accordance with UN General Assembly resolution 68/1, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will hold a humanitarian affairs segment from 23-25 June 2014. The Council will also hold a special event to discuss the transition from relief to development, to be convened immediately preceding the humanitarian affairs segment and following the annual session of the executive boards of the funds and programmes of the United Nations system.

22nd Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry

The Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has approved the dates of the next Committee on Forestry (COFO), set for 23–27 June 2014. The biennial session will be held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, and will bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, to seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate action. Participants will also include representatives from other international organizations and non-governmental groups. Participation in COFO is open to all FAO member countries.

CBD SBSTTA 18

At its eighteenth meeting, the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is expected to address, among others, issues related to marine and coastal biodiversity, biodiversity and climate change, and the relationship with IPBES.

2014 Substantive Session of ECOSOC

The 2014 substantive session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will include a High-level Segment, as well as the second meeting of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The HLPF meeting - taking place on 30 June-3 July - will include a three-day ministerial segment, and is expected to adopt a negotiated declaration. The ECOSOC High-level Segment will take place on 7-11 July, with 7-9 July devoted to the HLPF.

US-Africa Leaders Summit

The first US-Africa Leaders Summit will aim to further strengthen ties with Africa, build on progress made since US President Obama's trip to Africa in 2013, and advance a focus on investment and trade in Africa. US President Barack Obama will invite an expected 47 leaders from African countries.

International Workshop on Open Data for Science and Sustainability in Developing Countries

This workshop is being organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Council for Science's (ICSU) Committee on Data for Science and Technology, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations' Communication and Information Committee, and Kenya's Ministry of Communication and Information. It will discuss strategies and objectives of sponsoring and participating organizations concerning open data for science and sustainability in developing countries, with special consideration for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ICSU's Future Earth research program in developing countries. The workshop will also develop and endorse a set of principles and guidelines for preservation of, and open access to, research data in developing countries.

Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States

The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia".

Ninth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG 9)

The ninth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG 9) will consider issues in advance of the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12), including: strategic issues; scientific and technical matters; legal, governance and enforcement matters; international cooperation and coordination; and the programme of work and budget.

69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69)

The 69th Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) will convene at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 16 September 2014. The General Debate will open on Wednesday, 24 September 2014. The debate's opening was postponed from Tuesday, 23 September 2014, to accommodate the Climate Summit.

An 8-hour Special Session to Follow Up on the Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) is being organized to coincide with the high-level segment of the general debate at the UN General Assembly. The General Assembly has urged all Member and observer States and observers to be represented at the highest political level, including Heads of State or Government. Member States will have opportunity to recommit themselves to the ICPD Programme of Action. Civil society is expected to be involved in this meeting, based on equitable geographic representation.

2014 Climate Summit

The 2014 Climate Summit, which will be organized by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will take place in September 2014 with the aim to mobilize political will for a universal and a legally-binding comprehensive agreement in 2015.

Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety COP-MOP 7

The seventh meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is scheduled for 29 September-3 October 2014. Among other issues, the meeting is expected to address: handling, transport, packaging and identification (HTPI) of living modified organisms (LMOs); risk assessment and risk management; and socio-economic considerations.

CBD COP 12

The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. The theme of the meeting will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' The Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP 7) will take place immediately before COP 12.

Cities Biodiversity Summit

The Cities Biodiversity Summit will be co-hosted by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, and Gangwon Province, the Republic of Korea. It will take place during the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, bringing together scientists, NGOs and biodiversity experts from around the world. The Summit will take stock of previous Summits and forge actions for implementing a Plan of Action.

IPCC 40

The 40th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 40) will be held to adopt the Fifth Assessment Review (AR5) Synthesis Report and approve its Summary for Policy Makers. Subsequently, in December 2014, a copy of the Synthesis Report will be presented to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC.

Second UN Conference on LLDCs

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' has four key aims. It aims to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. In advance of the conference, the Open-ended Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for the Conference is expected to hold two sessions at UN Headquarters in New York, the US: the first from 12-13 June; and the second from 11-12 September.

Fiftieth Session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC)

The annual meeting of the ITTC will consider progress in the implementation of International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) projects and activities in support of the sustainable management of tropical forests and the promotion of trade in sustainably produced tropical timber.

CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee will take place 2-3 November and regional coordination meetings 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

GEO-XI

The eleventh plenary session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO-XI) will, among other things, review the draft of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) Implementation Plan for 2015-2025 that will guide GEO work for ten years.

G20 Leaders' Summit 2014

The Group of Twenty (G20) is a forum that assembles 19 members plus the EU, representing the world's major economies. General themes include global economy, financial regulation, poverty reduction and sustainable development. The next G20 Summit will take place in Australia, which will work as a troika in defining the next work programme in cooperation with the past (Russian Federation) and future (Turkey) hosts. The G20 members are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and the US, as well as the EU.

First International Environment Forum for Basin Organizations

The expected outcomes of the Forum include: the establishment of a regular platform for basin organizations to debate and work towards improving the governance and management of transboundary freshwater resources; strengthened legal, policy, financial and institutional mechanisms to support basin organizations in meeting environmental challenges for both surface and groundwater resources; priority actions to strengthen the ecosystems in transboundary basins applicable to both surface and groundwater resources identified by stakeholders; and increased political and institutional support to international cooperative frameworks for the sustainable management of transboundary basins.

15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) is expected to convene in 2015. The Commission provides the only permanent forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters specifically relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture. The Commission aims to reach international consensus on policies for the sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use.

UN Forum on Forests Eleventh Session (UNFF11)

The eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) will consider the future of the international arrangement on forests, based on challenges and its effectiveness. Thematic issues under consideration will include sustainable forest management (SFM) and forest law enforcement as was as cooperation and coordination.

South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC)

The Government of South Africa together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) are hosting the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC), to gather ministers, decision-makers, civil society, academia and the private sector to discuss experiences and strategies for accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy.
