14th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII 14)

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will follow up on the outcome of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) and discuss the post-2015 development agenda. The 14th session will include discussions on youth self-harm and suicide, indigenous issues in the Pacific region, and the possibility of an optional protocol to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Other issues to be addressed include implementation of UNDRIP, and the future work of the PFII.

International Conference on Illegal Exploitation and Trade in Wildlife and Forest Products of Africa

This conference will bring together governments, bilateral and multilateral partners, non-governmental organizations and regional cooperation agencies to discuss international and regional cooperation to combat illegal wildlife trade and crime affecting the region.

Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity: The Moral Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable Development

This event is being organized by the Vatican and has the objective of raising awareness and building consensus around sustainable development values and ensuring they cohere with the values of religious traditions, with a special focus on the most vulnerable. The event will also aim to: increase the debate on the moral dimensions of protecting the environment in advance of the papal encyclical; and help build a global movement across all religions for sustainable development and climate change throughout 2015 and beyond.

 The event will result in a joint statement on the moral and religious imperative of sustainable development, emphasizing the connection between respect for the environment and respect for people, particularly the poor, the excluded, victims of human trafficking and modern slavery, children and future generations. Vatican officials plus 60 high-level invitees (20 science, business, diplomatic and development experts; 20 religious leaders; and 20 academics and scholars) are expected to attend, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

UNGA High-level Thematic Debate on Strengthening Cooperation between the UN and Regional and Sub-regional Organizations

The President of the 69th UN General Assembly, Sam Kutesa, will convene this High-level Thematic Debate on strengthening cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations. UN Forum on Forests Eleventh Session (UNFF11)

The eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) will consider the future of the international arrangement on forests, based on challenges and its effectiveness. The meeting will also review progress in the implementation of the global objectives on forests and the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests. Thematic issues under consideration will include sustainable forest management (SFM) and forest law enforcement as was as cooperation and coordination.

ESCWA Second Session of the Arab High-Level Forum on Sustainable Development (AFSD)

Jointly organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in cooperation with the League of Arab States (LAS), this meeting seeks to support Arab regional preparations for the third session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), to be held in New York in June-July 2015. It also aims to contribute to the elaboration of the regional input to the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD 3), which will be held in Addis Ababa in July 2015. The Forum will take stock of, exchange views and harmonize regional positions on the progress of negotiations relating to the post-2015 development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and will discuss developments in the drafting of the outcome document of the FfD 3. In particular, the Forum will provide a multi-stakeholder platform for: exchanging perspectives regarding the transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the SDGs; reviewing status and trends of sustainable development in the Arab Region over the past two decades; developing a comprehensive regional approach to the mobilization of financial resources to achieve sustainable development in the region; gathering inputs on means of building effective institutions for sustainable development at the national and regional levels, and developing strategic development planning systems that mainstream sustainable development; and identifying means for advancing implementation of the SDGs in the region and building national capacities in monitoring and evaluation.

Science Fair at the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions

This science fair will convene in parallel with a segment of the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, which will address the theme 'From Science to action, working for a safer tomorrow'. Closely reflecting this theme, the science fair aims to: increase understanding of the scientific basis of the three conventions; clarify the scientific processes established under the conventions for their effective implementation; and increase awareness and understanding of the in-depth scientific considerations relating to decision-making under the three conventions.

2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Participants will debate, share and plan joint action on people-centered land governance, with the aim of contributing to broader goals of poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and human well-being and dignity, including within the context of the post-2015 development framework. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to ‘Africa Day,' with a spotlight on land governance in Senegal and the Africa region. The second and third days will discuss issues from a global perspective. The fourth day includes a field trip, which will be followed by an Assembly on the fifth day. The event will include plenary sessions, workshops and a Marketplace of Ideas. The International Land Coalition (ILC) is organizing the event together with the Pan African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development (CICODEV Africa) in partnership with Cadre de Recherche et d'Action sur le Foncier au Sénégal (CRAFS) and others.

Sixth Petersberg Climate Dialogue

The Dialogue is hosted by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). Originally an initiative of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, the first Dialogue was held in May 2010 as a follow-up to the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) and in preparation for COP 16. Representatives from all regions of the world gather at the Dialogue for informal discussions in support of the UNFCCC negotiating process. The Dialogues are chaired by Germany and the president of the upcoming COP (Mexico in 2010; South Africa in 2011; Qatar in 2012; Poland in 2013; Peru in 2014; and France in 2015).

Second UN Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Forum

The second annual Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Forum will continue the momentum from the launch of the UN Decade of SE4ALL (2014-2024) at the first annual Forum, which took place in June 2014. The Forums were envisioned as annual events that will provide benchmarks for progress during the Decade. UN Member States will use the global platform as an opportunity to "take stock and push forward". The event is expected to include governments, civil society and the initiative's partner organizations, who will present their work, form partnerships and commit to further action. The Forum will also facilitate coordinating input from SE4ALL to other processes, such as climate change negotiations and the post-2015 development agenda. The SE4ALL initiative aims, by 2030, to ensure universal energy access to modern energy services, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Intergovernmental Negotiations on Post-2015 Development Agenda – Fifth Session

Near East and North Africa (NENA) Soil Partnership Consultation Workshop (IYS 2015)

This is one of a series of Regional Soil Partnership Workshops being convened as part of activities to commemorate the International Year of Soils (IYS) 2015, under the auspices of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP). One of the objectives of the workshops is to consolidate collaboration among Focal Points to the GSP. Activities during the workshops will include: establishing steering committees where these are not currently available; appointing chairs for working groups' pillars; and finalizing regional implementation plans.

World Education Forum

The World Education Forum (WEF) 2015 will take place under the theme, ‘Equitable and inclusive quality education and lifelong learning for all by 2030'. WEF aims to: assess achievements and shortfalls in the implementation of the education-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Education for All (EFA) goals during the period 2000-2015; agree on a joint position for the education goals and targets in the post-2015 development agenda; and agree on a comprehensive Framework for Action to guide and support the implementation of the future education agenda. It will address five key themes: right to education; equity; inclusion; quality education; and lifelong learning. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is convening the Forum in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), UN Women and the World Bank.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2015

The UN proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for the 2015 Day will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development' to reflect the importance of efforts made to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the UN post-2015 development agenda for the period of 2015-2030 and the relevance of biodiversity for the achievement of sustainable development. The selection of the theme also underlines the adoption of the Gangwon Declaration at the High-level Segment of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

AfDB Annual Meetings 2015

During its Annual Meetings 2015, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will celebrate its 50th anniversary and elect its next president. The meetings will be held under the theme 'Africa and the New Global Landscape'. The agenda includes, inter alia: the launches of the African Economic Outlook (AEO 2015) and the Africa Ecological Futures Report; discussions on youth leaders, gender equality, Ebola, agribusiness, Africa's Power Challenge, local currency bond markets, stock exchanges, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); high-level events on the anticipated global climate change agreement and financing Africa's development post-2015; and meetings of the Board of Governors.

South Takes Action: 2015 Climate South Initiative: Challenges and Solutions

This conference will facilitate South-led initiatives on climate change, connecting government, business, civil society and social enterprise leaders from the global South for "a different kind of debate on climate - a debate led by the South, for the benefit of the whole world". The Climate South Initiatives hopes to give voice to those not typically heard at climate change conferences, to engage youth in the process, and to encourage collaboration on solutions, rather than negotiation. Developing and emerging economies will share their knowledge and expertise, focusing on areas for South-South cooperation. The expected outcome is a declaration outlining the joint measures that will support climate change leadership in the global South; the document will also give input to the climate change negotiations planned for November/December 2015 in Paris, France.

World Environment Day 2015

The 2015 World Environment Day (WED) global celebrations will convene under the theme resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) within the context of the planet's regenerative capacity. The slogan, ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care,” was chosen through voting on social media. Italy will serve as the host of WED 2015 and the global WED celebrations will be organized at the Milan Expo. Celebrations at the Milan Expo will complement the Expo's theme, ‘Feeding the Planet—Energy for Life,' which will showcase ideas, solutions and technology to help ensure healthy, safe and sufficient food for all while respecting the planet and its carrying capacity. The WED 2015 programme at the Milan Expo will also involve activities with partners such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), Slow Food, WWF Italy and the Green Film Network. WED is celebrated annually on 5 June as a day for positive environmental action.

39th Session of the FAO Conference

The 39th session of the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will be convened under the auspices of the International Year of Soils (IYS) 2015. The latest edition of the World Soil Resources Report will be launched during the Conference.

G7 Summit

In addition to standing agenda items on the global economy and foreign, security and development policy, the heads of state and government of the Group of Seven (G7) will consider: protection of the marine environment, marine governance and resource efficiency; antibiotic resistance, neglected and poverty-related diseases, and Ebola; retail and supply chain standards; and empowering self-employed women and women in vocational training. On development policy, the G7 will address in particular the post-2015 development agenda, as well as other conferences taking place in 2015, such as the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC. The Group will also continue its work on the Rome G7 Energy Initiative for Energy Security. On the second day of the Summit, G7 leaders will hold a dialogue with leaders from African nations. The G7 members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US.

World Oceans Day 2015

World Oceans Day has been celebrated annually, on 8 June, since the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 63/111 in December 2008. The Day seeks to: remind everyone of the major part the Ocean has in everyday life; inform the public on the impact of the human actions on the Ocean; develop a worldwide movement of citizen, towards the Ocean; and mobilize and unite the world's population on a project for the sustainable management of the World Ocean.

Ministerial Meeting of African LDCs on Structural Transformation, Graduation and the Post-2015 Development Agenda

The Ministerial Meeting of African Least Developed Countries (LDCs) aims to support African LDCs to make progress in poverty eradication, peace and development for graduating from the LDC category as well to support the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including goals and targets under the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA). Participants will explore actions for the structural socio-economic transformation of African LDCs and acceleration of progress towards graduation criteria. The meeting will take place under the theme, ‘Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life,' and will discuss agriculture, food security and access to energy as critical factors in Africa's development. The meeting will also discuss how the post-2015 development agenda and the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD 3) can reflect African LDCs' needs and integrate the priorities, goals and targets of the IPoA.

Third Drafting Session on Outcome Document of Third Conference on FfD

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. The Preparatory Process as outlined in the road map issued by the co-facilitators in October 2014 will include three drafting sessions on the outcome document. The third drafting session will take place on 15-19 June 2015.

2015 World Day to Combat Desertification

The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat has announced that the slogan for the 2015 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will be 'No such thing as a free lunch. Invest in healthy soils'. National and global observances will convene under the theme, 'attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems'. A global observance event will take place in Milan, Italy, during the UN Expo Milano 2015.

15th Meeting of Partners (MoP) of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP)

Convening under the theme, ‘Congo Basin Ecosystems: a source of natural capital, producer of economic value and driver of green growth for the well being of its people,' this meeting of partners will consider priority actions for the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP), develop roadmaps for implementation, and discuss partner engagement. Towards a Sustainable and Legal Wildlife Trade Symposium

Organized by the International Trade Centre (a joint UN/World Trade Organization agency) and Durrell Institute for Conservation and Ecology (DICE), University of Kent, this symposium aims to enhance understanding on how to support trade in wildlife that is sustainable, legal and consistent with the principles of sustainable development. Key objectives of the two-day symposium are to: foster dialogue between researchers, economists, policy makers, the private sector and other conservation-related disciplines; provide evidence-based options for improved conservation trade policy; and establish a research agenda for wildlife trade in the global economy.

Third High-level Political Forum

The Third High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 3), which will take place under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will focus on the theme, 'Strengthening integration, implementation and review - the HLPF after 2015'. The HLPF is mandated to meet every year under the auspices of ECOSOC and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). HLPF 3 will meet from 26 June - 8 July 2015. The ministerial segment will be from 6-8 July.

VII BRICS Summit

The Seventh Summit of the BRICS (Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa) will be held from 9-10 July 2015, in Ufa, the Russian Federation. The host country has signaled it will: ensure the continuity of the group's operation; take into account priorities put forward during the Brazilian presidency of the BRICS; and seek to enrich the group's work with new ideas, and strengthen its role in international affairs and regional issues.

Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD)

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place on 13-16 July 2015, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference will be held at the highest possible political level, including Heads of State or Government, relevant ministers – ministers for finance, foreign affairs and development cooperation – and other special representatives. The conference will result both in an intergovernmentally negotiated and agreed outcome and in summaries of the plenary meetings and other deliberations of the Conference, to be included in the report of the Conference.

2nd Africa Ecosystem Based Adaptation for Food Security Conference 2015 (EBAFOSC 2)

Taking place under the theme, 'Re-imagining Africa's Food Security Now and into the Future under a Changing Climate,' this conference will convene a number of round-tables, discussions and plenary sessions to discuss how ecosystem based adaptation (EBA) can be used to improve food security across the continent. Sessions will address: building scalable and inclusive business models for EBA-driven agriculture; innovative financing models for EBA-driven agriculture; the role of youth, women, and information technology in EBA-driven agriculture; the roles of education, the private sector and South-South cooperation in advancing EBA; innovations to reduce post-harvest food loss; and climate change and resilience through EBA as well as policy frameworks and implementation.

Fourteenth World Forestry Congress

The 2015 World Forestry Congress, the first to be held in Africa, will come together under the theme, ‘Forests and People – Investing in a sustainable future'. The Congress, convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the government of South Africa, will consider how forests can be mainstreamed into global discussions on sustainable development and will facilitate the development of partnerships to address global forestry issues.

International Forests and Water Dialogue

At the margins of the XIV World Forestry Congress (WFC), this dialogue will convene under the theme, 'Forests USE water! And forest ecosystems PROVIDE water!' and focus on the links between water and forests including trade-offs and synergies between water yield and other forest ecosystem services. In addition, a five-year action plan will be launched to support and increase coordinated international and national action on forest-water linkages in science, policy, economics and forest practices. Participants will be able to actively contribute to the debate and to the five-year plan. The dialogue will be hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), which is calling for abstracts, videos and posters.

Wildlife Forum

This one-day Wildlife Forum, organized by the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW) during the World Forestry Congress (WFC), will address challenges and opportunities in sustainable wildlife management, highlighting the experiences of countries, organizations, indigenous peoples, local communities and the private sector in addressing poverty alleviation and livelihood security issues while protecting wildlife.

International Day for South-South Cooperation 2015

The International Day of South-South Cooperation commemorates the adoption of the 1978 Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries. The annual day also aims to raise awareness on South-South cooperation as an important element for development that offers opportunities for developing countries and countries with economies in transition to pursue sustainable development and economic growth.

UN Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda

The UN Summit to adopt the post-2015 development agenda was mandated by the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2013 (Resolution 68/6). The Summit will take place on 25-27 September 2015, and will be convened as a high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly, per Resolution 69/244 of December 2014. In February 2015, UNGA President Sam Kutesa proposed adjusting the beginning of the Summit from 9 am to 11 am on 25 September, to allow for an address by His Holiness Pope Francis.

South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC)

The Government of South Africa together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) are hosting the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC), to gather ministers, decision-makers, civil society, academia and the private sector to discuss experiences and strategies for accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy. The event is aimed particularly at giving the African renewable energy industry opportunities to showcase its work and gain insights from other participants. This event will build upon previous "IREC" conferences held in Abu Dhabi (2013), Delhi (2010), Washington D.C (2008), Beijing (2005) and Bonn (2004).

The FAO Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. Global Landscapes Forum 2015

The third annual Global Landscapes Forum will take place on 6 December 2015, in Paris, France, conciding with the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). A successor to past Forest Days and Agriculture and Rural Development Days, the Forum focuses on land use as a key sector for achieving global climate and sustainability goals, and brings together stakeholders from different land-use sectors. In previous years, Global Landscapes Forum coordinating partners have included the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves

The Ministry of Environment of Peru (MINAM) through its National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme are hosting the 4th World Congress to address issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Specifically, the goal is to review implementation of the Madrid Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves 2008-2013, the Seville Strategy and the Statutory Framework of 1995. The Congress will assess lessons learned and new challenges faced by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, and will develop and launch an Action Plan for Biosphere Reserves for 2016-2025.

Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

Ninth World Urban Forum

The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.

XXVII International Primatological Society Congress

The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will gather over 800 of the world's leading primate experts, scientists and researchers at the XXVII International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress. GRASP's bid to host the meeting was built upon the theme, 'Global Connectivity to Ensure the Future of Primates,' and proposes to include Nairobi-based UN experts in areas such as climate change, deforestation, sustainable development, and civil conflict, among others, in IPS symposia, workshops and panels. The event will convene during 2018. The XXVI IPS Congress is scheduled to convene from 21-27 August 2016, in Chicago, Illinois, US.
