First Great Green Wall Global Conference

Since its inception in 2007, the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI) has evolved into a pan-African sustainable landscape program to address land degradation and desertification, boost food, environmental and economic security, and support communities' adaptation to climate change. The First Conference on the GGWSSI will gather representatives from more than 20 Sahelian countries and partners to discuss the further scaling-up of implementation based on commitments made at the Paris Climate Change Conference with a view to: develop a “road map for transformational action on 
the ground,” including a Great Green Wall results framework; confirm political commitments in support of the initiative; strengthen the GGWSSI Community of 
Practice; and set new strategic directions for GGWSSI 
communication and knowledge management. The Conference will be organized around three days of technical sessions to exchange and share knowledge about programs and projects in support of the Great Green Wall, and a one-day high-level segment bringing together African Ministers and development partners. Practical interactive seminars will also take place on innovation, communication and knowledge services. Coordinated and sponsored by diverse partner organizations, the conference will draw on experiences from ongoing Great Green Wall projects, including: the World Bank and Global Environment Facility (GEF) supported Sahel and West Africa Program (SAWAP); the AAD programme, which is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and funded by the partnership programme between the EU and Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP-EU); and the Front Local Environnemental pour une Union Verte (FLEUVE), an EU-funded Great Green Wall project coordinated by the Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Forest Carbon Partnership Facility PC21

The 21st Meeting of the Participants Committee (PC) of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) is expected to review country submissions and decide on grant resource allocation. The PC is made up of 14 REDD+ countries and 14 financial contributors, and includes observers representing indigenous peoples, civil society, international organizations and the private sector.

33rd Session of the FAO Regional Conference for the Near East (NERC 33)

The 33rd session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Regional Conference for the Near East (NERC) will meet under the theme ‘Promoting food security, blue growth and empowerment of small-scale farmers and women in North East and North Africa (NENA) region'. The conference will discuss, inter alia: the contribution of livestock to food security in NENA; implementation of the Blue Growth Initiative in the region; and the empowerment of small-scale farmers and women. Conference participants will also be briefed on the regional office's progress in implementing recommendations made at the previous regional conference, and discuss programme and budget matters. The meeting will focus on FAO priority activities in the region, including the decentralization process, as well as achievements regarding the three regional initiatives: ‘Building Resilience for Food Security and Nutrition'; ‘The Regional Initiative on Small-Scale Agriculture for Inclusive Development'; and ‘Water Scarcity Initiative.' The Conference will start with a three-day meeting for Senior Officers designated by their governments, followed by a Ministerial Meeting on 12 and 13 May 2016. FAO regional conferences are held in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Near East and North Africa, and are convened on a biennial basis to discuss priority issues for agriculture and rural development.

15th Session of Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The 15th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will bring Member States and indigenous peoples' representatives together around the theme, 'Indigenous peoples: conflict, peace and resolution.' The session will address: implementation of the six mandated areas of the PFII with reference to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); conflict, peace and resolution; and coordination among the three UN mechanisms on indigenous affairs. A dialogue will take place with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Chair of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The session will also consider the future work of the PFII, and emerging issues.

World Migratory Bird Day 2016

Organized by the Secretariats of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), World Migratory Bird Day is an annual, global awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. Each year people and dedicated organizations around the world take action and organize hundreds of public events such as bird festivals, education programmes, exhibitions and bird-watching. The 2016 World Migratory Bird Day will draw attention to the illegal killing, taking and trade of migratory birds.

Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) (SDEP2)

The Second Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) will be hosted jointly by the Italian Government, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the European Union Commission (EC). The two day Forum will be split into day one, 16 May being a technical thematic stakeholder day deepening on Energy Access, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Energy Security, and day two, 17 May will be dedicated to high level delegates and stakeholders. The Forum will build on the First Stakeholder meeting held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012. It envisages participation of African and European Ministers, AU and EU Commissioners, and more than 300 other high-level participants representing policy-makers, regional institutions, international organisations, the banking & finance industry, the private sector, academia, the civil society and the media. The conference is expected to result in an Africa-EU Energy Stakeholder Forum Communiqué, launch a “Mapping of Initiatives and Programmes in Africa Report”, release of an “Intermediate AEEP Status Report”, and develop a stakeholders' call-for-action.

Women Deliver 2016

As a leading, global advocate for girls' and women's health, rights, and wellbeing, Women Deliver brings together diverse voices and interests to drive investments and progress, particularly in maternal, sexual, and reproductive health and rights. The focus of this fourth global conference will be on how to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) so they matter most for girls and women, with a specific focus on health – in particular maternal, sexual, and reproductive health and rights – and on gender equality, education, environment, and economic empowerment.

UNEP Science-Policy Forum

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) presenting this two-day event in the lead-up to the Second UN Environment Assembly meeting (UNEA-2), bringing together policy-makers and advisors; the scientific and research community including citizen scientists; representatives of Member States; media and communication specialists; and Major Groups and Stakeholders engaged in supporting the delivery of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A high-level panel will discuss challenges and opportunities at the science-policy interface to deliver on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Parallel sessions will take place on two tracks, on the topics of: sustainable consumption and production (SCP); resource efficiency; the water-food-energy nexus; forestry, mining and extractives; oceans, coastal areas and marine cosystems; natural resources; and oceans, coastal areas and marine ecosystems; and air quality, sand and dust storms. UNEP will present highlights from its sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6), and other reports. UNEP will present a summary of the forum discussions to the Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum taking place from 21-22 May, and to UNEA-2, which takes place from 23-27 May 2016. The forum is organised with partners, including the UN University, Future Earth, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).

International Day for Biological Diversity 2016

The UN proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for the 2016 Day, to be celebrated globally, will be 'Mainstreaming Biodiversity: Sustaining People and their Livelihoods'.

World Humanitarian Summit

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is organising the summit, which aims to set a new agenda for global humanitarian action, focusing on humanitarian effectiveness, reducing vulnerability and managing risk, transformation through innovation, and serving the needs of people in conflict. The summit, the first UN conference of its kind, will bring together the humanitarian community with other actors from the development, peace-building and peacekeeping spheres to work toward a coherent approach in the way humanitarian aid is delivered. Heads of State and Government, and representatives of civil society, the private sector, crisis-affected communities and multilateral organisations will attend the Summit. Preparations are taking place via one global and seven regional meetings, online consultations, and a September 2015 thematic meeting in Berlin, Germany. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is establishing a High-level Panel on Humanitarian Financing to provide recommendations that will help to frame the Summit discussions.

2016 AFDB Annual Meetings

The 2016 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) will convene under the theme 'Energy and Climate Change,' which draws on one of the Bank's 'High 5' priority areas, namely to 'Light up and Power Africa,' and reflects the Bank's New Deal on Energy and decisions emanating from the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015. The Bank's Annual Meetings are its largest annual event, bringing together approximately 5,000 participants, and featuring around 40 official events in addition to the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors. The Meetings enable representatives of government, business, civil society and media to discuss the social and economic development of Africa.

Resumed Review Conference on the UN Fish Stocks Agreement

The Resumed Review Conference on the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (UN Fish Stocks Agreement) will convene from 23 to 27 May. The Resumed Review Conference is mandated to assess the effectiveness of the agreement and the adequacy of its provisions and, if necessary, to propose means of strengthening the substance and methods of implementation of those provisions. The first Review Conference took place in 2006, followed by a resumed Review Conference in 2010.

Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time (UNEA-2) in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system.

Midterm Review of Istanbul Programme of Action

This high-level midterm review of the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) will: assess the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) by the least developed countries (LDCs) and their development partners; share best practices and lessons learned; and identify obstacles, constraints and actions and initiatives needed to overcome them; and address new challenges and emerging issues. The review will reaffirm the commitment to addressing the special needs of the LDCs and to further strengthen the global partnership for LDC development in IPoA priority areas. The review is expected to result in an intergovernmentally negotiated and agreed outcome, in the form of a political declaration.

Third Session of the Arab Forum on Sustainable Development (AFSD)

The Third Session of the Arab Forum on Sustainable Development (AFSD) will bring together governments from the Arab region, UN and regional organizations, Major Groups and other stakeholders to discuss Arab perspectives on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to enhance political commitments to begin work on the 2030 Agenda in the region. Participants will discuss and agree on future operational modalities of the AFSD as the primary regional platform for cohesive, coordinated implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the region. The meeting is expected to result in a set of findings and recommendations that will be submitted to and presented at the 2016 session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and the 29th UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Ministerial Session.

Tenth Meeting of Open-ended Working Group of Basel Convention (OEWG 10)

The tenth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG 10) will consider issues in advance of the 13th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 13), including: strategic issues; scientific and technical matters; legal, governance and enforcement matters; international cooperation and coordination; and the programme of work and budget. OEWG 10 is to consider revision of the technical guidelines on e-waste adopted by COP 12 on an interim basis.

International Training Course on Combating Desertification

Supported by the Turkish International Cooperation and Coordination Agency, this training course is part of the programme of action under the Ankara Initiative, launched to strengthen implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) for the period from 2016 to 2019. The course will address technical issues, including: the causes of desertification and land degradation; seed and seedling production; forestation; erosion control; and participatory approaches that increase regional collaboration. The course will focus on the exchange of knowledge and experiences in combating desertification, promote cooperation among related institutions and technology transfer, share lessons learned from Turkey with regard to combating desertification and land degradation, and support and strengthen implementation of the UNCCD.

Lomé Conference: Protect Our Oceans

The Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union of Maritime Security and Development in Africa will take place in 2016 in Lomé, Togo. At the Lomé Conference, Heads of State and Government of the 54 countries in the African Union will meet with experts and leaders from the business world in order to establish a roadmap on Maritime Security in Africa, including an African strategy for protecting its oceans and seas that provides peace, security and stability. Delegates will discuss maritime strategy within the context of the 2050 Africa Integrated Maritime Strategy (2050 AIMS Strategy), including an implementation plan and roadmap for promoting a secure and sustainable blue economy. Participants will also address: maritime insecurity marked by acts of assault and piracy; illicit trafficking at sea; regional and international cooperation to safeguard marine safety; illegal fishing; and preservation of marine life. The Summit will build on the results of summits in 2013 and 2015, and aims to make maritime space the key driver of Africa's sustainable economic and social development.

Seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7)

Energy ministers from the Clean Energy Ministerial's 24 participating governments will gather for CEM7, hosted by the United States in June 2016, to fully implement the CEM 2.0 vision of a more ambitious and effective CEM ready to respond to climate and clean energy challenges. Ministers will assess progress to date and launch new campaigns and efforts to drive progress in priority, high impact areas. As an implementation forum, the CEM will play a critical role in the Road from Paris to help countries deliver on their respective national clean energy goals and to build confidence and the capacity to increase ambition over time.

First annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum)

Mandated by the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Multi-stakeholder Forum on science, technology and innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) will address the topic "realizing the potential of science, technology and innovation for all to achieve the sustainable development goals." The STI Forum is part of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) and is expected to "provide a venue for facilitating interaction, matchmaking and the establishment of networks between relevant stakeholders and multi-stakeholder partnerships in order to identify and examine technology needs and gaps, including with regard to scientific cooperation, innovation and capacity-building, and also in order to help facilitate development, transfer and dissemination of relevant technologies for the Sustainable Development Goals."

50th Meeting of the GEF Council

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council meets twice a year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, chemicals and waste, international waters, land degradation, and sustainable forest management; and in the GEF's integrated approach programs on sustainable cities, taking deforestation out of commodity chains, and sustainability and resilience for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Council also provides guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. The GEF Council meeting will be preceded on 6 June by a consultation with civil society organizations (CSOs) at the same location. On 9 June the Council will convene as the 20th meeting of the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), also at the same location.

17th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea

The 17th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will convene from 13-17 June. The Consultative Process is intended to facilitate the annual review by the General Assembly of developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea by considering the Secretary-General's report on oceans and the law of the sea and by suggesting particular issues to be considered by the General Assembly, with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the intergovernmental and inter-agency levels should be enhanced.

World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) 2016

This year's World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will take place under the slogan 'Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People'. The global observance event will take place in Beijing, China, and will be hosted by the State Forestry Administration of China. The event will showcase China's new development strategy, 'The Belt and Road,' which aims to strengthen cooperation to combat desertification and land degradation, primarily in Eurasia. During the celebrations, China will launch the 'One Belt and One Road Joint Action to Combating Desertification Initiative' together with interested countries and stakeholders. WDCD 2016 activities will also seek to demonstrate how the target of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) can be a critical element for achieving other sustainable development as well as climate goals.

G20 Energy Sustainability Working Group Meeting #3

The third meeting of the Energy Sustainability Working Group under the Group of 20 (G20) Chinese Presidency will take place on 28 June, in Beijing, China. Sustainable energy issues on the Chinese Presidency's agenda include advancing the implementation of the G20 Principles of Energy Collaboration and strengthening cooperation on energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency. The G20 is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies. It includes the European Union (EU), which is represented by the European Commission and the European Central Bank, and 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US.

First Meeting of UN-REDD Programme Executive Board

The new main body of oversight, operational guidance and decision-making for the UN-REDD Programme will consider the proposed multi-year work plan in support of the UN-REDD Programme 2016-2020 Strategic Framework, as well as options for strengthening coordination and complementarity with other global initiatives supporting REDD+ and forest countries.

Africa Carbon Forum 2016

The Eight Africa Carbon Forum (ACF) will inform participants on the latest investment, finance and development opportunities relating to climate change. Issues for discussion include: opportunities for Africa in a post-Paris global landscape; policy options and opportunities for transformational development in the region presented by Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs); innovative projects, programmes and investment opportunities for climate-resilient development, such as the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative and African Initiative on Adaptation and Loss and Damage; sources of climate finance and how to access them, including market-based approaches to sustainable development; results-based financing; and cooperative initiatives under the Nairobi Framework (NF) Partnership, which aims to improve the level of participation of developing countries, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The ACF is organized by the Nairobi Framework partners, including the UNFCCC, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) along with the UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The Forum will bring together climate change focal points, project developers and policymakers, as well as representatives from financial institutions, CDM Designated National Authorities (DNAs), the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), multilateral agencies, the media and other stakeholders.

Resilient Cities 2016: 7th Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation

This Forum, which is expected to bring together together over 400 experts and practitioners, will focus on a range of issues related to urban resilience and climate change adaptation, including inclusive resilience strategies, financing the resilient city, measuring and monitoring progress, resilience and adaptation planning, governance and collaboration, resource management, and resilient infrastructure. Participants will be able to network, build new partnerships, and exchange ideas and best practices. Participants will include: elected officials, including mayors; academics, researchers and students; private sector and NGO representatives; urban and regional planners; water and sanitation specialists; civil engineers; financial institution representatives; disaster risk and emergency managers; and climate change and adaptation experts. The Forum, which is meeting for the seventh year, is organized by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and co-hosted with the City of Bonn, Germany. Resilient Cities focuses on solutions for local governments, including cities and small island states.

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2016)

The Fourth High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), convening under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will take place on 11-15 July 2016, followed by a three-day ministerial meeting of the Forum on 18-20 July 2016. The theme of the 2016 session will be 'Ensuring that no one is left behind,' as decided in an ECOSOC plenary session on 14 March 2016.

Fourteenth Session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD 14)

The 14th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD 14) will discuss the most appropriate means of delivering on the post-2015 development agenda, and will decide on UNCTAD's programme of work. The week-long meeting will bring together Heads of State and Government, Ministers and other prominent representatives of business, civil society and academia to tackle global trade and economic development issues. The session will include ministerial debates, high-level round tables, thematic events, a World Investment Forum and a Civil Society Forum. 23rd Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO 23)

The 23rd session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate actions. COFO is the highest FAO forestry statutory body and meets every two years.

ECOSOC High-Level Segment 2016

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) high-level segment will be held on the theme 'Implementing the post-2015 development agenda: moving from commitments to results'. The segment will include the three-day ministerial meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF), convened under the auspices of the Council, and the biennial Development Cooperation Forum (DCF).

OEWG 38 and ExMOP 3 to the Montreal Protocol

The 38th Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG 38) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer will be held from 18-21 July 2016, followed by the Third Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties (ExMOP 3) from 22-23 July. These two meetings are expected to focus on efforts to conclude a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) Amendment to the Protocol in 2016. The OEWG and ExMOP will be preceded by the 56th Meeting of the Implementation Committee (ImpCom 56) on 16 July, which will review compliance with Protocol obligations, and on 17 July by a meeting of the Bureau and coordination meetings of the regional groups.

ECOSOC Coordination and Management Meeting 3

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Coordination and Management Meeting (CMM) will review the reports of the Council's subsidiary and expert bodies, including reports of Functional Commissions, the Regional Commissions, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations and expert and ad hoc bodies. The CMM also carries out system-wide coordination and review of specific development issues, with the aim of promoting more integrated responses to specific areas, as well as considering special country situations or regional issues, according to its agenda.

Habitat III PrepCom

The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) will hold its third of three meetings in advance of the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), in Jakarta, Indonesia. Participants will discuss a New Urban Agenda that will focus on policies and strategies to harness urbanization.

Seventh Meeting of the Regular Process for World Ocean Assessment

The seventh meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole on the Regular Process (Regular Process) for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (World Ocean Assessment), will convene from 3-9 August. The objective for the Regular Process is to improve understanding of the oceans and to develop a global mechanism for delivering science-based information to decision makers and the public. The Regular Process has met since 2011 and is responsible for the preparation of the World Ocean Assessment. A summary of the first Assessment was released in 2015.

African Drought Conference

This meeting will focus on the theme, 'Enhancing resilience to drought events on the African Continent'. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Namibia will organize this event in follow up to its role as UNCCD COP11 President and to the outcomes of the high-level meeting on national drought policies (HMNDP) held in Geneva in 2013. The conference will focus on identifying the specific needs of African countries in the area of effective drought mitigation, with a view to developing a strategic framework for enhancing resilience to drought events on the African continent. The overall objective of the Conference is to come up with an overarching strategic framework for Africa that will enhance resilience to the impact of drought events. It is expected that the Conference will set in motion the process to develop a strategic framework for enhancing resilience to drought at the African level that will contribute to poverty alleviation, economic development and enhance environmental and human well-being. The work of the Conference will be guided by an agenda for action white paper document, which will be circulated in advance of the conference.

Preparatory Committee on BBNJ

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 69/292 the Preparatory Committee will make substantive recommendations to the General Assembly on the elements of a draft text of an international legally binding instrument on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The preparatory committee will start its work in 2016, meeting from 28 March to 8 April and from 26 August to 9 September 2016.

2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress

The 2016 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Congress will focus on the theme "Planet at the Crossroads". Among other objectives, the World Congress will launch the Hawai'i commitments: globally transformative and innovative conservation initiatives to meet the critical challenges and opportunities of our time, including the imperative to scale up action on biodiversity and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The IUCN World Congress meets every four years to bring together leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and indigenous and grass-roots organizations to discuss and decide on solutions to environment and development challenges worldwide. The event will hold a public forum consisting of debates, workshops, dialogues, round-table discussions, training courses, music and exhibitions, as well as a Members' Assembly that will deliberate on IUCN resolutions and recommendations regarding key conservation issues.

Twelfth Meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC-12)

The 12th meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC) of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade will take place back-to-back with the 12th meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention (POPRC). The CRC will consider draft decision guidance documents on carbofuran and carbosulfan, and review the notifications of final regulatory action for atrazine. It will also consider notifications found to meet Annex I criteria.

UNGA High-Level Meeting on Refugees and Migrants

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will convene a high-level plenary meeting on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants, on 19 September 2016, immediately prior to the general debate of the 71st session. Per the UNGA resolution adopted on 22 December 2015 (A/70/L.34), the meeting will be convened within existing resources. The UNGA also requests the President to finalize organizational arrangrnents for the meeting, including on a possible outcome, "through open, transparent and inclusive consultations with Member States".

Twelfth Meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-12)

The 12th meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) of the Stockholm Convention will take place back-to-back with the 12th meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC) of the Rotterdam Convention. The Committee will consider the draft risk profiles for dicofol and pentadecafluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), further information related to Annex F for decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), and the draft risk management evaluation for short-chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), among other topics.

US-hosted Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis

US President Barack Obama will host a Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis that will seek to secure new commitments towards: increased and sustained support for UN humanitarian appeals; greater opportunities for resettlement; and expanded opportunities for refugee self-reliance through access to education, legal employment, and other measures. The summit was announced by Permanent Representative of the US Samantha Power during her presidency of the UN Security Council, in December 2015. The summit will be preceded by a UN General Assembly (UNGA) High-level Meeting on large movements of refugees and migrants.

CITES CoP17

The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP17) will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 24 September - 5 October 2016. This will be the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES held on the African continent since CITES came into force on 1 July 1975, but the first on the continent since 2000.

Mayors' Summit

This event will bring together mayors from around the world to promote more environmentally-sound and fair food systems in urban areas. This gathering of mayors will include mayors of cities that are signatory cities to the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, which aims to achieve healthy food for all, promote sustainability in the food system, educate the public about healthy eating and reduce waste. As of November 2015, 116 cities have signed the pact. While FAO offered to host the first gathering, beginning in 2017, Mayors' gatherings are expected to be hosted by signatory cities to the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact on a rotational basis.

Global Consultation on Farmers' Rights

Suggested by the sixth session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), the Global Consultation on Farmers' Rights will be hosted by Indonesia and co-sponsored by Norway. The meeting will be informed by a series of pre-consultations held back to back with other ITPGR meetings, and an electronic survey.

39th Session of the ICAO Assembly

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly establishes ICAO's policy for the upcoming triennium, and reviews ICAO's work programme in the technical, economic, legal and technical cooperation fields. The Assembly is expected to establish an Executive Committee, as well as Technical, Economic and Legal Commissions. The Executive Committee will address, inter alia: technical assistance; aviation security; implementation support and development; facilitation and the ICAO Traveller Identification Programme; environmental protection; ICAO civil aviation training policy and capacity building in aviation; increasing ICAO efficiency and effectiveness; and ICAO's work programmes and activities in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Technical Commission is expected to address, inter alia, aviation safety and air navigation monitoring and analysis, standardization and implementation support. The Economic Commission will discuss, among other things, economic regulation of international air transport, aviation data, economics of airports and air navigation services, and economic development of air transport. The Economic Commission will discuss a consolidated statement of continuing ICAO policies in the legal field. The Assembly meets at least once every three years and is convened by ICAO's governing body, the Council. Assembly outcomes are then provided to the other ICAO bodies and to its Member.

International Dialogue on Migration 2016: Follow-up and Review of Migration in the SDGs (II)

This workshop will take place in October 2016, in Geneva, to review the results of initiatives on monitoring the migration-related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target. Sponsored by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), this second workshop will be followed by a one day Global Regional Consultative Process (GRCP) meeting. The results of International Dialogue on Migration 2016 and the GRCP will be consolidated in a publication, and will constitute an input to the December 2016 Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit in Dhaka.

ECRI-Basil Fuliehan Institute of Finance Conference on Post-2015 Challenges and Opportunities

The European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), a human rights body of the Council of Europe, and the Basil Fuleihan Institute of Finance, a civil service learning center specializing in public financial management and customs, are jointly organizing this conference. It will convene under the theme, 'Post-2015 challenges and opportunities for a transformational role of governance, particularly in conflict affected countries.' The Basil Fuleihan Institute hosts the regional training center of the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the secretariat of the GIFT-MENA Network, the Governance Institutes Forum for Training in the Middle East and North Africa. It is an independent organization established by the Governments of France and Lebanon, and has previously been supported by the Governments of Canada, the Netherlands, the European Union (EU) and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.

5th UCLG Congress: World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders

Organized by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the 5th UCLG Congress: World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders will convene under the theme ‘Local Voices for a Better World'. The Summit will bring together over 3000 stakeholders to: promote the recommendations, practices and experiences of local and regional authorities; help ensure they are realized; and create a space for meeting and exchange among local and regional elected officials, as well as communities. UCLG will also present new formats exploring the structural changes required to face existing challenges and approach development from a different perspective, including integrating the UCLG family into one "Network Hub" where ideas can be shared and exchanged. The Summit will also aim to advance recommendations on the localization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and feed into the UN Conference on Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), to be held the 17 to 20 October 2016, in Quito, Ecuador and its expected outcome, the New Urban Agenda.

Global Regional Consultative Process (GRCP) Meeting

Immediately after the conclusion of the second workshop of the International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) 2016, which is addressing the theme, ‘Follow-up and Review of Migration in the SDGs, ‘ the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will hold a one-day meeting of the Global Regional Consultative Process (GRCP). The GRCP will bring together representatives of States and international organizations for an informal, non-binding dialogue on ways to enhance inter-regional cooperation, showcasing best practices towards achieving migration-related targets at the regional level. The results of IDM 2016 and the GRCP will be consolidated in a publication, constituting an input to the December 2016 Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit in Dhaka.

World Mountain Forum 2016

The 2016 World Mountain Forum (WMF) will convene under the theme, 'Mountains for our Future,' and will explore opportunities for sustainable mountain development in the context of the recently adopted Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forum will focus on four sub-themes: mountains and climate change; mountain communities and livelihoods; mountain ecosystem services; and sustainable mountain agriculture. The meeting is jointly organized by the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda, with financial and technical support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) as well as diverse partners from around the world involved in the SDC-funded Sustainable Mountain Development for Global Change (SMD4GC) programme. The previous WMF took place in Cusco, Peru, in 2014.

43rd Session of the Committee on World Food Security

The 43rd Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is expected to address a series of items arising from its Multi-year Programme of Work, including: nutrition; engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); connecting smallholder farmers to markets; urbanization, rural transformation and implications for food security and nutrition; and monitoring. A thematic event is expected to share experiences and take stock of the use and application of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security.

UNCCD CRIC 15

The 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP12) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) decided to convene a special session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC15) to discuss methodological questions relating to reporting. This special session of the CRIC will address enhancing synergies in national reporting requirements under the UNCCD, and the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) target.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) will hold its 66th biennial meeting in Portotoz, Slovenia. The Commission meets on a biennial basis to ensure implementation of its decisions and workplans on the conservation and management of whale species.

51st Meeting of the GEF Council

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council meets twice a year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, chemicals and waste, international waters, land degradation, and sustainable forest management; and in the GEF's integrated approach programs on sustainable cities, taking deforestation out of commodity chains, and sustainability and resilience for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Council also provides guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. The 25-27 October GEF Council meeting will be preceded on 24 October by a consultation with civil society organizations (CSOs) at the same location. On 27 October the Council will convene as the 21st meeting of the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) also at the same location.

Second World Irrigation Forum

The Second World Irrigation Forum (WIF2) is organized under the theme, 'Water Management in a Changing World: Role of Irrigation in Sustainable Food Production'. The meeting will discuss: how actors are balancing the demands of maintaining water supply, producing food, generating energy and protecting ecology; managing climatic extremes, especially floods and droughts; and "smart actions" for alleviating hunger and poverty through irrigation and drainage. WIF is a multi-stakeholder forum focusing on water management in agriculture that takes place every three years. WIF2 is organized by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) and hosted by the Thai National of ICID (THAICID). Abstracts of proposed papers may be submitted by 28 February 2016.

52nd Session of the International Tropical Timber Council and Associated Sessions of the Committees

The 52nd session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) and Associated Sessions of the Committees (Finance and Administration; Economic Information and Market Intelligence; Forest Industry; and Reforestation and Forest Management) will be held in November 2016 to address project and governance related issues. ESCWA Conference on Competitive Sustainability Opportunities and Challenges for Arab States in the Next Decade

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) organizes this sustainable development conference annually in cooperation with the Arab Regional Administrative Development Organization (ARADO). This will be the 16th such conference. In 2015, the annual conference took place on the theme of 'Post-2015 Development Agenda in the Arab States', and in 2014, the theme was 'Cooperation in Establishing Resilience Toward Global Risks to the Arab Region.' Many international agencies support the conference, including the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank.

117th Meeting of the International Maritime Organization Council

The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is elected by the IMO Assembly for two-year terms beginning after each regular Assembly session. The Council is the Executive Organ of IMO and is responsible for supervising the IMO's work. Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs all the functions of the Assembly, except the function of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention. The Council also: coordinates the activities of the IMO's organs; considers the draft work programme and budget estimates of the IMO and submits them to the Assembly; receives reports and proposals of the Committees and other organs and submits, with comments and recommendations; appoints the IMO Secretary-General, subject to the Assembly's approval; and enters into agreements or arrangements concerning the relationship of the IMO with other organizations.

9th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit

The 9th Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit will take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Global Forum on Migration and Development is an initiative of United Nations Member States to address the migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways. It is an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process that marks the culmination of more than a decade of international dialogue on the growing importance of the linkages between migration and development.

International Mountain Day 2016

International Mountain Day 2016 will focus on the theme ‘Mountain Cultures: Celebrating Diversity and Strengthening Identity'. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will lead global observance events that aim to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments. In 2002, the UN General Assembly designated 11 December as International Mountain Day to foster understanding and respect for the traditional knowledge and techniques of mountain communities that are key to managing and enhancing fragile mountain ecosystems. Events in 2016 will also highlight ways to boost livelihoods in mountain areas through a focus on high value sustainable products and tourism. #WeLoveMountains

World Ocean Summit 2017

This Economist event will be the fourth World Ocean Summit, and will discuss how to finance a sustainable ocean economy, including consideration of the types of investment frameworks and capital necessary to bring the blue economy to scale. The event will convene over 360 global leaders from government, industry, multilateral organizations, the scientific community, and civil society to address the risks and opportunities involved in pursuing a blue economy approach and showcase examples of businesses, governments, scientists and others who have successfully aligned economic activity with sustainable management of the oceans. Additional discussion topics include: the global demand for seafood over time; the economic case for addressing marine pollution; and areas for new investments in the ocean economy.

46th Sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies

The 46th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the 46th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) under the UNFCCC will convene during the first sessional period of 2017.

2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

This conference will focus on how to reduce loss of life and economic losses from disasters caused by manmade and natural hazards. Several thousand representatives of governments, international organizations and civil society are expected to attend the event, which comes at a time when millions are food insecure because of a very strong El Niño. The conference aims to encourage countries and others to go beyond disaster management to addressing the risks that lead to greater losses from disasters, including poverty, unplanned urbanization, environmental degradation and poor risk governance. The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR), which was established in 2007 and takes place every two years, provides the opportunity for exchanging information, discussing the latest developments and knowledge, and building partnerships across sectors. It aims to improve DRR implementation through better communication and coordination amongst stakeholders, and build resilience. The Global Platform is organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), which is also the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

The 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 72) will convene at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 12 September 2017. The General Debate will open on Tuesday, 19 September 2017.

Ninth World Urban Forum

The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.

XXVII International Primatological Society Congress

The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will gather over 800 of the world's leading primate experts, scientists and researchers at the XXVII International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress. GRASP's bid to host the meeting was built upon the theme, 'Global Connectivity to Ensure the Future of Primates,' and proposes to include Nairobi-based UN experts in areas such as climate change, deforestation, sustainable development, and civil conflict, among others, in IPS symposia, workshops and panels. The event will convene during 2018. The XXVI IPS Congress is scheduled to convene from 21-27 August 2016, in Chicago, Illinois, US.
