8 May 2012: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has initiated the Inland Lakes Integrated Development and Management Support Project (PAIGELAC) to assist in restoring and improving Rwanda's fisheries sector.
5 May 2012: The African Development Bank's (AfDB) second green growth seminar highlighted the involvement of civil society in promoting green growth in Africa. Presenters from Oxfam provided an overview of their initiatives in the region, and offered evidence of inclusive, equitable and sustainable growth in Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere. Participants were also briefed on the AfDB's engagement with civil society.
5 May 2012: The Second African Organic Conference concluded with the adoption of The Lusaka Declaration on Mainstreaming Organic Agriculture into the African Development Agenda, which urges the African Union (AU), including the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), to implement the African Organic Action Plan. The Conference aimed to showcase the role of organic agriculture in ensuring food security and poverty alleviation.
25 April 2012: The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have implemented a collaborative partnership to boost fisheries development in Africa, in support of regional efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
30 April 2012: During the Regional Conference for Africa (ARC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), participants called for the creation of the Africa Trust Fund to complement international financial resources to help fight hunger and scale up programmes to respond food security challenges. The FAO will join in country-led consultations to draft a proposal for the Fund.
20 April 2012: The African Development Bank’s Green Bank Initiative has reported that it has achieved positive results through large savings in water, energy and paper use.
27 April 2012: African Ministers emphasized the need for increased industrialization and integration for boosting trade, specifically stressing the need t0 boost intra-African trade, during a Special Session of a Meeting of African Ministers of Trade, held prior to the 13th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XIII), as well as during UNCTAD XIII.
23 April 2012: During a recent international workshop on Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS), participants heard from representatives across Africa on the need for additional financial and technical support to ensure that African countries can continue LEDS implementation.
23 April 2012: A series of seminars on green growth, launched by the African Development Bank (AfDB), has commenced with a discussion on making green growth work in Africa.
16 April 2012: The World Bank's Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP) has released a report titled "Economic Impacts of Poor Sanitation in Africa," which highlights that approximately 1% to 2.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of African countries and US$5.5 billion is lost annually due to inadequate sanitation.
4 April 2012: A joint meeting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Ministers responsible for Agriculture, Livestock, Water Resource, Environment, Arid Lands and Drought Disaster Management with High Level Development Partners has committed to establish the Global Alliance for Action for Drought Resilience and Growth to improve coordination and harmonization of investments and policy.
12 April 2012: The first Africa Forum on Science, Technology and Innovations highlighted the need to invest in this key sector to foster sustainable growth and development and provide job opportunities for youth and women.
11 April 2012: Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by food insecurity in the Sahel region, which comprises Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, a European Commission press release outlines its efforts to provide humanitarian and development aid through mitigation and preparedness, emergency response, and recovery and resilience building.
5 April 2012: The recently released 2011 Revision of the World Urbanization Prospects report has noted that 86% of future urban population growth will be driven by African and Asian countries.
3 April 2012: Under the framework of the Africa-EU Partnership, African Ambassadors met in Brussels to further deliberate on the African common position for the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and to discuss areas of common interest with the EU, UN and other stakeholders.
23 March 2012: Carlos Lopes (Guinea-Bissau) has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the next Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
26 March 2012: The Fifth Joint Meeting of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development met to address a broad range of issues related to development under the theme "Unleashing Africa's Potential as a Pole of Global Growth."
23 March 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has called for urgent funding to implement, over the next 90 days, a plan to give farmers and pastoralists in the Horn of Africa means to build resilience to future shocks. Activities for which the $50 million is being sought include crop and livestock production, and cash-for work programmes to restore infrastructure.
19 March 2012: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed a grant agreement worth $63 million with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to develop the value chains of four key African crops agreed upon under the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP), namely rice, cassava, maize and wheat.
March 2012: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has announced it is providing technical assistance to Nigeria, Thailand and Uruguay in addressing the challenges posed by Nanotechnology and Manufactured Nanomaterials. It is anticipated that lessons learned from the activities will be considered by the third International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM-3), scheduled to convene in September 2012.
