ECREEE Wind Power Workshop Builds Capacity in ECOWAS Region
11 November 2013: The Economic Community Of West African States' (ECOWAS) Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) held a week-long workshop on wind energy in West Africa that included a forum on market perspectives and training on project development.
The workshop was held from 4-8 November 2013, in Praia, Cape Verde, and contributed to the implementation of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy (EREP), which aims to bring installed wind power in the region up to 318 megawatts by 2020, and 993 megawatts by 2030. The over 100 participants were introduced to the wind power planning tools WindPRO and WAsP, and participated in the creation of a regional action plan for wind power development. The workshop also included sessions on the state of the art of wind technology, case studies of wind development in the ECOWAS region and elsewhere, and wind project financing and regulation.
It was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Energy of Cape Verde and CABEOLICA jointly organized a regional workshop on wind power development in the ECOWAS region. The activity was undertaken under the umbrella of the GEF Strategic Programme for West Africa (GEF-SPWA). [Workshop website with links to presentations][Workshop agenda]
