FAO Develops Webportal on Horn of Africa Drought Emergency
July 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has opened a webportal on the food crisis in the Horn of Africa.
As a result of two poor rainy seasons, an estimated 12 million people require assistance in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda. The FAO is focusing its interventions on: increasing access to water resources; providing agriculture inputs, such as drought-tolerant seeds, animal feed and fodder for livestock; using cash transfers to mitigate the rising price of food; improving water management practices and training farmers on enhanced dryland crop and livestock production systems; and investing in post-crisis early recovery to restore livelihoods and strengthen households' resilience.
