IISD Convenes Consultations in Africa on Environmental Governance
August 2011: The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is organizing consultations with African stakeholders from different levels of governance to contribute to Africa's preparatory process on options related to global environmental governance (GEG) reform, which is one of the themes for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
The goal of the high-level consultations - funded by the Government of Denmark and conducted in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) - is to identify key issues for Africa in international environmental governance (IEG) reform, and outline options that are not currently part of Africa's official preparatory process for the UNCSD.
The first consultation took place on 23-24 May 2011, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Following the second consultation, which will convene from 8-9 September 2011, in Johannesburg, South Africa, a paper summarizing reform options will be submitted to the African preparatory process for consideration.
