14 June 2012: The High Level Forum on "Harnessing Diaspora Resources for Development in Africa" met from 14-15 June 2012, in Bagatelle, Mauritius. The Forum was co-organized by the World Bank's Africa Region through its African Diaspora Program (ADP) and the Government of Mauritius, with a financial contribution of the European Commission through the African Institute for Remittances (AIR) project.
The Forum gathered over 50 representatives of African government officials, development partners, private sector stakeholders and experts from several continents, to discuss actions to mobilize Diaspora resources.
The Forum is one of three preparatory events towards the Global Forum on Migration and Development that will take place in Port-Louis, Mauritius, in November 2012. The theme for the summit will be “Enhancing the human development of migrants and their contributions to the development of communities and states.”
Ali Mansoor, Financial Secretary of the Republic of Mauritius, highlighted that discussing about the Diaspora means working on systems and procedures. Octaviano Canuto, Vice President and Head of Network Poverty Reduction and Economic Management, World Bank, added that contributions include remittances, trade and investment, and transfer of skills and technology.
